 Canada’s history dates back thousands of years, with Indigenous peoples inhabiting the land long before European explorers arrived. In the late 15th century, explorers like John Cabot and Jacques Cartier began European contact. In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec, marking the beginning of New France. By the 18th century, conflicts between France and Britain led to the British taking control after the Treaty of Paris in 1763. In 1867, Canada became a self-governing country within the British Empire through the British North America Act, uniting Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Expansion continued westward, bringing in more provinces and territories. The 20th century saw Canada evolve politically, gaining full legislative independence from Britain with the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and full sovereignty with the patriation of its constitution in 1982.
